The Region of Lombardy
An answer to the increasing demand on energy and environmental
pollution issues
Issues and choices
The strategy involving the participation of the region of Lombardy in the BIOGASMAX project aims to combine environmental pollution control with growth of competitiveness of the regional production system, supporting the extension of the market for green fuels.
The mission, addressed by the Trading Directorate of the Lombardy region, is linked to the preparation of policies, regulations and strategic plans for the promotion of the distribution and adoption of green fuels for private and public transportation, intended to be a sustainable answer to the increasing energy and environmental pollution problems in the area under consideration.
A detailed survey conducted by the region in 2007 resulted in considering the characteristics of the available fuels, the actual rate of production and the development plans at EU level, with the conclusion that natural gas represents a very interesting green fuel, available in reasonably high quantities and with real production capacities.
European directives and best practice indicate that the bio-origin of natural gas, namely BIOMETHANE and BIOGAS, represent very promising low environmental impact fuel sources in the medium term. The region of Lombardy intends to invest in promotion (in the short term) and in supporting demonstrations (in the long term) of BIOGAS/BIOMETHANE as a real option.
The region recognises that participating in BIOGASMAX is a key opportunity to learn and follow European best practice in the field. The project’s experimental demonstrations and achievements will contribute to regional policy definition in the field.
The region is interested in identifying a possible set of policies and guidelines for incentivising BIOGAS / BIOMETHANE production, transportation, distribution and consumption
