Stockholm
Prepared for further expansion
Previous experience
Biomethane has been produced and used as a fuel in Stockholm since 1996. At first, part of the focus was to find outlets for the biomethane produced. Rapid development in the demand for biomethane depends on new customers. The pioneer customer was the municipality, which bought biomethane cars. Later, city buses, trucks, vans, refuse trucks, taxis and company cars followed this example. At the end of 2006, there were approximately 3,000 biomethane cars, 30 buses and 30 refuse trucks in use in the Stockholm area. The fuel for public transport is already 25% renewable.
Several reasons account for the interest of new customers. The municipality has introduced free parking in the city for clean vehicles and biomethane fuel is cheaper than petrol. State subsidies also exist in Sweden for clean vehicles owned or leased by companies. Also, the City of Stockholm has actively communicated the advantages of clean vehicles, as well as news.
Stockholm-Arlanda is the first airport in the world to use biomethane vehicles.
